#ChelseaLately Live Tweeting by Kierra Dye

I chose to follow the live tweets of Chelsea Handler’s late-night talk show, Chelsea Lately because she and her round-table of comedian friends comment on pop culture and news stories. I thought that the content of the tweets would depict fandom or anti-fandom as well as relate to other topics we discuss in class. Chelsea Handler is known for her self-deprecating humor and bluntness. Many of Chelsea’s fans adore this about her, as depicted by the following tweet:

In this particular episode, the round table discussed Miley Cyrus’s performance at the European Music Awards, in which she danced provocatively with a little person. One of Miley’s back-up dancers who is also a little person wrote an open letter saying that she was ashamed because she was being used exclusively for her (dis)ability. Chelsea frequently refers to little people as “nuggets” and talks about how much she loves them, but in a way that pokes fun at them and their (dis)ability. Chelsea’s assistant, Chuy, is a regular on the show and is also a little person and the brunt of many of Chelsea’s jokes. One tweeter picked up on how able-ist her actions may seem.

After discussing the exploitation of little people by Miley Cyrus, they moved on to talk about how Miley began smoking what is speculated to be a joint after she won an award on the EMAs. MTV edited out that portion before it aired in the U.S. Chelsea critiqued MTV for not showing drug use but exploiting teen pregnancy.

One follower gave a critique that one round-table guest was boring:

However, a majority of the tweets were like the following tweet, talking about how funny Chelsea Lately is and how it is one of their favorite shows:
